Goal Setting

In your early twenties, at the start of your career, it’s especially important to set goals. These goals should both be long term and short term ones, and should include all areas in your life, for example: professional, relationships (family, friends, co-workers), fitness/health, intellectual, community involvement, financial, education, and artistic.

Why is goal setting is important?

Goal setting is the key to success because it allows us to decide what we want to accomplish and to then focus in on these things we are aiming for. Goals allow us to shape our destiny and become inspired. Not only do goals provide us with direction and motivation, but they also allow us to begin to visualize, make a plan, strategies, and sort out the details toward achieving our goals.

How do you set effective goals?

According to OfficeArrow, an effective goal has five distinct elements: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and timely.

Specific: What do you want to achieve? How will you achieve it? Why is it important to you? Clearly define the outcome you want.

Measurable: Establish concrete criteria for measuring your success. Use actual numbers, target dates, or specific events to indicate when your goal has been achieved.

Achievable: Your goals should push you past your comfort point but you should still be able to attain them with effort and commitment.

Relevant: Your goals should be important to you and the outcome should impact your life. Likewise, you should have the ability to directly impact them. Don’t set goals that aren’t significant or that you can’t do anything to impact achievement.

Timely: Your goals should have a time element established. This will keep you on track and prevent you from simply pushing a goal off infinitely into the distant future. It should matter now and you should have a sense of urgency about it.

How do you stick with your goals?

Actually sticking with your goals might be the hardest part about goal setting. In order to ensure that you accomplish your goals, revisit them regularly and assess your progress. It’s important to constantly be reflecting on your goals and molding them as you go. Other helpful tips to sticking to your goals include: writing them down, sharing them with others and asking for support, rewarding yourself along the way, use positive and motivating language, and create goals for different increments of time.
